I think what happens with most of us is we get caught up trying to drive the ball a mile. We spend hours at the driving range hitting ball after ball with our driver, and probably quite a few with our irons as well. Imagine if you put that kind of time into your putting! You would surely improve your score in a hurry. I'm not saying to give up on practicing your driving, or irons, or even your approach shots. What I am saying is,  try to balance your practice time. If you spend as much time on good putting instruction as you do your driving, you'll improve your score faster! It took me years to realize this, but once I did I saw my scores drop faster than ever.
